Day 48 Pipestone to Mitchell

Tuesday 6th July
Daily mileage 100miles Average Speed 13.9mph Ride Time 7hr13min
Total Mileage 1844

After nearly 12 hours sleep despite aching all over we felt a lot more awake and ready to tackle the day. We packed up quickly which was sped up by the presence of hundreds of mosquitoes and made it on the road at 7.30am. The sky had cleared completely now blue and very sunny. We took quiet county roads today which made for simply amazing riding. Without breakfast we cycled 25miles to Dell Rapids. Then after a short stop we cycled 10 miles to Colton and after another short stop we cycled a further 30 miles to Salem.

At Salem we found a park and had some lunch where we joined a man and lady playing Horseshoe. Of course we had a go and with a few lessons we were as competitive as ever and Kris actually got a ringer which is worth 3 points so he won! There was an Easterly wind of approx 9mph and we were determined to make the most of it so we only had a short stop before heading west on 38. We cycled a further 35 miles to Mitchell where we stopped at Dave’s house, our warm showers host. This is the first time I have ever cycled 100 miles in one day and as I attempted to video the event I nearly crashed into a parked car!
We chatted with Dave and showered before he took us out to dinner at a steak house where we had a buffalo steak each which hit the spot! There was a TV in the restaurant showing a tornado warning for slightly South West of us and as we left the building an extremely loud siren was sounding in the town to warn everybody of the tornado. We took the scenic route home around Lake Mitchell and visited his friends house John and Tona who have a concrete basement, where Kris had a double chocolate coffee oatmeal stout which was hard going! We chatted for a while in their lovely Cedar Wood home on the lake side before returning home for more sleep!
