Day 56 Rapid City

Wednesday 14th July
We joined Doug for breakfast on the terrace then were picked up by Chip, Doug’s friend from Rotary who was our tour guide for the morning. We took a short ride to Target for a few bits we had run out of then drove up to Sturgis which is the town which hosts a massive motorbike rally where 600,000 riders come annually for a couple of weeks touring the black hills. We had a look around the Harley Davidson Store then made our way over to Forte Meade.
Here we had a look around the museum which showed artefacts of World War 1 and Custer’s war with Little Big Horn. We then drove over to Deadwood which is a gambling town and we had lunch in a casino owned by Kevin Costner. There was memorabilia from his various films all over the building and apparently he comes here a lot as he loved South Dakota after filming Dances with Wolves.

We went to Saloon 10 which is where Wild Bill Hickock was shot in the back of the head then we visited Mt Moriah Cemetery where he lay buried next to Calamity Jane high up on Boot Hill. We took the scenic drive back through the hills to Doug’s where we had a few chores to do including research for the next stage of our trip through Yellowstone as we have not looked any further than Rapid City. Doug is hosting a house party for a gathering of any friends who would like to visit us to chat about our trip this evening and we leave tomorrow morning. We have had two days off the bike but they are always just as exhausting sightseeing and meeting people as cycling! We are extremely grateful to Chip for our tour this morning and thanks again to Doug for making us so welcome in his lovely home!
